Diving from far back for overtaking is a popular racing strategy. It is risky and often ends in chaos. Is dive bombing the optimal strategy?
What is Dive Bombing?
Dive bombing is considered an overtaking attempt by braking very late on corner entry. The driver will, therefore, overshoot and force the other kart to change their line. By definition, the overtake might not be successful and often involves contact. Largely, the dive bomber counts on the other driver lifting off and leaving enough room. Meaning they leave much to chance by counting on other’s consciousness to balance out their recklessness.
Benefits of Dive Bombing
The effect of dive bombing when performed successfully can be very positive. Firstly, the element of surprise from so far back will prevent the driver ahead from defending. This almost guarantees getting along side and reach attacking position. Secondly, in case we successfully keep it on track and contact free, we will control the corner and the line the other driver takes. This allows us to place our kart where we need and force the other driver into an uncomfortable position. When they fall of the racing line completely, they will also lose time and the chance to counterattack.
Disadvantages of Dive Bombing
Dive bombing has several disadvantages because of its risky nature. For starters, the chance of crashing is high since we brake much later than normal. In order to jump a kart in a braking zone, we need to be later on the brakes. But when we come from far back, we’re almost guaranteed to overshoot the corner. Another requirement for a successful maneuver is that the driver ahead has time to react. When they’ve already committed to a line, it might be too late to react and prevent contact. And, at the same time, when they see you coming early enough, they can cleverly place their karts to perform a switchback on acceleration. This will leave the attacker in a vulnerable and worse position than before.
Dive bombing is a risky all or nothing strategy and doesn’t have the best success rate. It will never be optimal but could bring results in a high stake situation, for example, in a last lap or when you need to gain positions fast. Always prefer to make calm and calculated overtakes but never miss an opportunity.
