Children’s karting categories provide a thrilling entry into the world of karting. Early karting experiences are essential for children to lay the groundwork for future racing skills and strategies. Young drivers learn very fast but useful advice is hard to come by. That is why we talked to this young man:

Braking in Small Classes has NO RELATION to Other Categories
In karting, especially for young drivers in the Micro and Mini categories, braking is a nuanced skill. Unlike more powerful karts, locking the brakes in these categories can significantly reduce engine power on exit. Therefore, drivers are advised not to slide flamboyantly in braking zones or lock the brakes.

Racing Lines: Rotax vs CIK FIA categories
Driving styles differ significantly between Rotax and CIK FIA categories. In CIK FIA, drivers take wider lines on entry to get on the throttle quickly for optimal exit speed. In contrast, Rotax drivers can adopt tighter lines due to better power on exits. When grip increases, Rotax drivers can maintain tight lines, while CIK FIA drivers might go wider to avoid speed loss.
Driving Techniques in Various Grip Conditions
Conditions demand adaptability and mastering grip is essential already for children. In slippery conditions, aggression is necessary to maneuver the kart effectively. However, as grip increases, smoother driving is preferable to maintain speed and for better kart control.
Strategic Slipstreaming with Small Karts

The relatively lower power output of the karts makes slipstreaming incredibly valuable. Slipstreaming occurs when a kart closely follows another, allowing the trailing kart to gain speed without additional effort. It boosts overtaking on the straights but slipstreaming is an essential karting strategy for children to set fast lap times. Without the benefit of slipstream, one can lose half a second per lap on a fast track with long straights.
