KartletiX Coach Ragnar Veerus stood on a podium in Latvia last weekend, scoring a second place in DD2 category in the chase for Lithuanian Championship title. Race pace, however, was fenomenal.
Qualifying Practice & Heat 1
The day started in drying conditions which led the race to be very slippery. The gradually improving track proved be a learning curve even for the most experienced drivers with the cold tyre pressures dropping from 1.3 to 0.65 bar within one day. Ragnar Veerus secured P2 in qualifying which rewarded him with 2 extra points for the championship. First lap of heat 1, Ragnar took the lead and started building a gap. However, improving track conditions led to overheating tyres within a few laps and last few laps saw a tight battle between the leaders. Ragnar held on an secured a heat win, gaining more important points in the championship.
Heat 2
Heat 2 started more slowly for Veerus now with lower pressures, and it was his title rival Maxim Shchurko making the early moves. He jumped quickly from P6 to P1, Veerus slowly following him through. It was until lap 7 that Ragnar really started gaining on the leader, closed the gap and forced his rival to defend on the last lap. Equal race results from the heats meant Shchurko had the upper hand to take pole for the final.
Final
Final start was heated with Shchurko squeezing our KartletiX coach after the lights went out. This was followed by an aggressive first corner, where Ragnar got punted from behind and dropped to P6. Knowing only P2 might be on the cards, he slowly heated up the tyres and started moving up the field. At the halfway distance, Veerus took P2 and started chasing Shchurko with 4.4 seconds between the pair. Ragnar set fastest lap after fastest lap, clocking 0.3 seconds faster than his rival. The gap at the finish line came down to 2.3 seconds.
Ragnar is still leading the championship and will fight for the Rotax Grand Finals ticket in the final round. This will take place in 3 weeks along with the final round of Latvian Championships in Jelgava, Latvia.
